One of the best times to see your primary care provider is when you are not sick. Preventative care is 100 percent covered by most insurance plans and gives your provider a chance to identify concerns early. Annual checkups also give you time to get to know your provider. That way, when an issue does arise or you get sick, you can turn to a provider you trust.
Annual physical exams typically include:
- A review of your health history.
- A check of vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate).
- A heart and lung exam.
- A head and neck exam to look for infections or sinus problems.
- A test of reflexes.
- A skin check to look for abnormal moles or growths.
Men's exams also include checks of the genitals and prostate. Women's exams include Pap tests and pelvic exams.
